Towards the end of the colonization of Sri Lanka by the British, the Kandian kingdom was also came under the British rule, It is is a known fact that the Sinhala nation culture and Buddhism were given stepmothers' treatments at that time period.
Grieved by the situation Buddhist monks and Sinhala aristrocats of that time tried try to re established the Sinhala culture and buddhism as a result of this a monastery called sri Sudarmaramaya was buit at Katukele near colombo to Kandy high way in 1900 s. At that time women folk also represented another set of opressed. The aristrocats started teaching dress ralcing , knitting and English language to their daughters through monastery.
There was a dire necessity at that time to uplift the educational standard of Sri Lankan children, which was felt deeply by aristrocats. One of them was a gentlemen called "Dharmawickrama" who donated a land to fulfil this purpose. This was followed by starting a mix school called "Arama Pasela" in the one of the buildings of the monastery in 1907 with madam Lady Blake as the head of it.
